Bears expected to make roster moves today

The Chicago Bears are expected to make a couple of roster moves as the team fills openings created by injuries.

Left guard Chris Williams and reserve safety Anthony Walters, a special teams player, have been placed on injured reserve. Williams had emergency surgery on his left wrist Sunday night after dislocating it during the first half of the team’s victory over the Detroit Lions. Walters suffered a pulled hamstring.

The Bears will sign safety Winston Venable to replace Walters. The undrafted rookie free agent from Boise State made five tackles on special teams for the Bears in the first five games of the season.

The team brought three veteran linemen in for a tryout on Tuesday – Renardo Foster, Mike Gibson and Mansfield Wrotto. It’s not expected any one of them will be signed. So, the Bears will likely take a look at another veteran today or consider promoting one of three offensive linemen on the practice squad – Ricky Henry, Levi Horn and Reggie Stephens.

Edwin Williams is expected to take Chris Williams’ place in the starting lineup. Edwin Williams started three games at guard for the Bears last season and made two starts for the Washington Redskins in 2009.

The Bears are still without first-round draft pick Gabe Carimi. The right tackle had arthroscopic knee surgery last Friday and there isn’t a timetable for his return yet.
