Bears name Mike Tice offensive coordinator
It could take the Chicago Bears a little while to find their next general manager.
But coach Lovie Smith didn’t waste any time coming up with a new offensive coordinator. Offensive line coach Mike Tice was promoted to the role this morning, three days after Smith parted ways with Mike Martz. Tice will be the fourth offensive coordinator in nine seasons for Smith.
Tice has never been a coordinator before but he did call plays on occasion while he was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. The Bears will probably have to add a line coach to work under Tice, and it is expected the team will seek an experienced quarterbacks coach to work with Jay Cutler and assist in the passing game.
The Bears are not the first team to consider Tice for a coordinator job. The Tennessee Titans requested permission to interview Tice for the job under new coach Mike Munchak last February. The Bears denied permission and gave Tice a raise because they did not want to risk losing him.
Tice figures to be a good match for the Bears with running back Matt Forte in place.
