Bears playing fantasy football

The Chicago Bears watched the market open in free agency without taking a lot of action.

The front office has been moving at hyper speed in the last 24 hours, and the franchise has become the home for bust-outs and older veterans. Consider that in that time frame the club has added wide receiver Roy Williams and running back Marion Barber, who haven’t had their best days in Dallas recently, and now they’ve picked up Amobi Okoye and Vernon Gholston, high draft picks on the defensive side of the ball with little to show for their careers.

Meanwhile, the fantasy football approach to free agency hasn’t addressed needs on the offensive line. Contract talks with veteran center Olin Kreutz have broken down. The Bears have one player who has made one start at center in the NFL – Roberto Garza. That came in the 2001 season finale.

But general manager Jerry Angelo is engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken with Kreutz. There aren’t a lot of options out there and he’s been the undisputed leader of the locker room for a decade. Chris Spencer could be one option to replace him, but what is emerging is a clear divide between the front office and the coaching staff, which has been pining for Kreutz to return.

The NFP’s Greg Gabriel shared his experiences and thoughts on Kreutz as a former member of the Bears’ front office. He believes the team would make a serious error by passing on him.
