Bears release QB Brett Basanez
The Chicago Bears stopped their flurry of signing draft picks long enough to let one player go.
Reserve quarterback Brett Basanez was cut loose two days before the start of the team’s mandatory three-day, five-practice minicamp. Basanez figured to be an odd man out after the team drafted Dan LeFevour in the sixth round out of Central Michigan last month.
That leaves the team with three quarterbacks on the roster for new offensive coordinator Mike Martz – Jay Cutler, Caleb Hanie and LeFevour. The team has internally discussed the possibility of adding a veteran to the mix, but that isn’t a given and if it happens it will likely speak to the team’s comfort level with Hanie, who served as the No. 2 last year in his second season as an undrafted free agent from Colorado State.
Now, back to the signing frenzy.
