Bears to check out Alex Van Pelt for QB job

The Chicago Bears are taking another crack at filling their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach position by looking at a former member of Raheem Morris’ staff in Tampa Bay.

The Bears offered the job to former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Greg Olson but he declined it, choosing to sign on with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, Bears coach Lovie Smith will meet with Alex Van Pelt, who was the quarterbacks coach for the Bucs and had a long playing career in the NFL, primarily as a backup. They are supposed to get together today, according to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune.

The Bears are looking for an experienced person for the position to pair with recently promoted offensive coordinator Mike Tice. The Bears also need to hire an offensive line coach to fill out Smith’s staff. Van Pelt has served as an offensive coordinator in Buffalo previously.

Tice had hoped to reunite with Dirk Koetter, who he worked with in Jacksonville, but he landed a better job as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.
