Biggs: Agent confirms contract talks for Andy Reid

Bob LaMonte, the agent for Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, confirmed that he is in the midst of contract negotiations with the club on an extension.

That is what he told Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday.

“Andy definitely wants to stay in Philadelphia, and the team definitely wants him to stay in Philadelphia,” LaMonte told Brookover.

The rest of it is up to your imagination—length, value and a timetable for getting a deal done for Reid, who is signed through 2010. Owner Jeff Lurie has always been committed to Reid, and there’s no reason to think that will not be the case moving forward.

If you’re Reid, what’s the advantage in acting now? If the deal is right, it’s smart to strike at any time but with five former Super Bowl winning coaches on the sideline—Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan—at least three of those guys are expected to command huge pay days when they return to the game in January. They could get contracts that change the landscape for head coaches.

Now, Reid doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring to compare against them, but Reid’s got a far better lifetime record than Gruden, who was two games above .500 in Tampa Bay. Reid has a better winning percentage than Holmgren and Shanahan also, and he’s won more division crowns than Shanahan. Granted, a poor ending to this season wouldn’t help Reid in offseason negotiations. Questions remain about the Eagles defense, and they’re certainly in a battle in the NFC East with the Giants. But a strong playoff run would bolster his cause. Either way, expect Reid to be handsomely rewarded in time.
