Biggs: Bears add punter McGee
The Chicago Bears have signed punter Richmond McGee as insurance in the event that veteran Brad Maynard cannot play tonight against the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field.
McGee was selected after a tryout this morning with Glenn Pakulak, but the club still hopes that Maynard will be able to go. He is questionable with a left groin muscle injury suffered in practice last Wednesday.
The Bears took McGee to training camp with them this summer as a camp leg. The rookie was on Texas’ national championship team.
Maynard has missed just one game in is 13-year career and that happened when the same injury bothered him in Week 2 of the 2007 season. The team replaced him with Dirk Johnson at the time. A decision on Maynard’s availability will be made 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
Pakulak still might have a shot at a job before the season ends. He could draw interest from the Atlanta Falcons, who lost veteran punter Michael Koenen to a concussion during Sunday's victory over the Buffalo Bills in the Georgia Dome. A league source said Pakulak expects to at least get a look from the Falcons.
