Biggs: Bears release TE Michael Gaines
The Bears made their corresponding roster move with the addition of defensive end Gaines Adams, and it was a net loss for tight end Michael Gaines.
The veteran was released to make room for the pass rusher the team acquired Friday night from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick.
Gaines was one of the final players to make the 53-man roster for the Bears and was a luxury as a fourth tight end. He had been active for just two games, and appeared in only one. There was talk that Gaines could fill a role as an H-back, but that opportunity never really materialized for him.
General manager Jerry Angelo chose Gaines over draft picks Juaquin Iglesias and D.J. Moore, who are not expected to contribute this season, because he probably did not want to get rid of a draft pick when he just traded a future selection for Adams.
