Biggs: Bucs getting their kicks with tryout kickers
When Raheem Morris said Mike Nugent “will get his opportunity again’’ after the kicker missed two field goals Sunday in Tampa Bay’s 16-13 loss at Washington, he meant he will get his opportunity again if the Buccaneers don’t cut him and sign someone else.
It’s a possibility as Morris announced the Bucs have kickers in today for a tryout at One Buc Place. It could be they’re kicking Nugent to the curb with him off to a 2-for-6 start to the season for an 0-4 team with little margin for error.
“Kickers aren’t really my expertise, but we missed them,’’ Morris said. “The only thing that really matters about a kicker is the result. When you go out there, you either make it or you miss it. The operation looked good, the snap looked good, it was down in time and we missed the two field goals. It was a windy day, and again I’m not going to sit here and make any excuses. Their kicker made kicks in the wind and ours has to make kicks in the wind. Mike is aware of that and he needs to go out and make kicks.
“We evaluate everyday. We have kickers coming in today to work out. You have to evaluate your team everyday, you have to evaluate where you are going everyday. If you have an opportunity to get better, then you try to. That’s just where we are right now. We have to evaluate every single day.”
Morris declined to speculate whether popular veteran Matt Bryant was one of the options. He was cut after a hamstring injury dogged him through training camp and preseason.
