Biggs: Bucs place Leftwich on IR, raid practice squads
Now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are without either of the quarterbacks who were set to lead them this season.
Veteran Byron Leftwich has been placed on injured reserve with an elbow injury and the Bucs went off and plundered some practice squads to fill roster spots. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter was signed off the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys, and wide receiver Terrence Nunn was signed off the practice squad of the New England Patriots. Cornerback Mike Mickens was released to create the other roster opening.
Leftwich won a quarterback derby with Luke McCown in the summer and started the first three games of the season while McCown was shipped off in a trade to Jacksonville. Josh Johnson replaced Leftwich and started for four games before the club turned to first-round draft pick Josh Freeman. Leftwich passed for 594 yards and four touchdowns in his three games.
Carpenter, an undrafted free agent from Arizona State, signed with the Cowboys in May. Nunn was undrafted from Nebraska.
