Biggs: Falcons kick the tires on some kickers
The Atlanta Falcons turned up the heat on veteran kicker Jason Elam on Tuesday, bringing in four free agents for a tryout.
Brandon Coutu, Steve Hauschka, Sam Swank and Shane Andrus all showed their stuff but the team didn’t make a move.
Elam, in his 17th season, has been battling tough times this season. He’s missed six kicks already this season and he’s had eight entire seasons where he hasn’t missed that many, including last season when he was 29-for-31.
He missed a 35-yard try in the 34-31 overtime loss at the New York Giants, and he missed a 34-yarder against Carolina in what was a two-point loss. There’s some speculation that the whole process has been off, meaning long snapper Bryan Pittman and holder Michael Koenen have been off in their duties as well.
“That is an operation that has not been smooth for us over the last two games, and it's costs us points," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “It's something again, not going to call out one person in terms of how it should go. (But) it's a sequence were we have to snap the ball when the snapper gets the signal, and the kicker has to kick the ball on time. Right now we are not doing that efficiently.”
When they bring in four kickers for a tryout, they’ve got concerns about the kicker too.
