Biggs: Falcons kicking tires on a replacement for Elam?
Paul Edinger showed up at the combine in Indianapolis back in February intent on one thing—getting a leg up on a possible job back in the NFL as a kicker.
He spent a couple days seeing as many special teams coaches as he could, tracking down front office types who might know him and passing out business cards. Edinger’s phone rang, and he will have a tryout today with the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Edinger is coming in for a tryout along with ex-Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant as veteran Jason Elam continues to struggle. Elam has missed seven field goals this season, including a 43-yarder in the Falcons’ narrow win over Tampa on Sunday. He’s missed one field goal in each of the last three games, and has five misses in the last five games. Elam missed from 35 yards in regulation in the Falcons’ 34-31 overtime loss to the New York Giants.
But Elam isn’t the only part of the problem. Coach Mike Smith has talked about his frustration with the whole process, and to that end the team will also look at long snappers Jeff Robinson and Joe Zelenka.
Edinger has not been in the NFL since kicking for the Minnesota Vikings in 2005.
