Biggs: Kolb ready for his shot

Kevin Kolb is all set to the be the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now, it’s just up to the team.

That’s the flip side of the Donovan McNabb drama this offseason. The team has a young quarterback in place who looked capable when he was called on to replace McNabb while he sat out with a rib injury early in the season.

In fact, Kolb became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards in each of his first two starts. That’s saying something right there.

"I want to be a starter in the NFL," Kolb told Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "That’s my No. 1 goal right now. I want that opportunity. But I’m going to be a team player. I trust (coach) Andy (Reid). I trust his decisions and his ability to see what’s in the future and plan out my career the right way. Hopefully, we’ll do those things to get me on the field at some point, not knowing when it’s going to be."

The Eagles have plenty to determine over the coming months. McNabb is entering the final year of his contract. They could have him back as the starter and let Kolb get a little more seasoning before turning to him. They could decide that it’s time to pair the young quarterback with the young wide receivers in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin and let them take flight together. There’s a lot on the line here.

McNabb has said that he plans to return. Reid has said he intends for McNabb to return. Nothing is set. Kolb, 25, hasn’t talked to anyone. He passed for 391 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Saints and came back with 327 yards and two more touchdowns in a win over the Chiefs, then he was idle the rest of the season. He’s got three years under his belt now.

"I’m hearing reports from my friends and family, but for the most part, I’m trying to avoid it," Kolb said. "I’m just taking time off, working out and relaxing my mind a little bit."

Stay tuned.
