Biggs: Kraft optimistic about deal for Wilfork

Vince Wilfork might not have to wear the collar of the franchise tag very long. Maybe not even a week. The New England Patriots placed the franchise tag on Wilfork on Monday and two days later owner Robert Kraft has told a group of reporters at the scouting combine that a longterm contract is near.

That’s got to be a good thing for Wilfork. His wife took to her Twitter account after he was tagged and expressed their desire on a multi-year deal.

"In business, you’ve got to prioritize," Kraft said according to Albert Breer of the Boston Globe. "We’ve got a budget. We want develop and create a team that puts us in the best position to win. Vince was a priority, and we’ve worked very hard, and I think both sides have worked hard, and I think we’re close, and I hope we close something.

"In the end, he was our priority – our first priority. We’ve got a number of other deals we’ve got to do, so we’re going about building our team, and I hope in this process we get to close this out. I know he’s a very important part of our team, and I think we’ve made an offer that hopefully can get it done."

Sounds like a contract could come soon. Obviously, when that happens it will help the team move forward to handle some other priorities for the offseason.
