Biggs: Nugent axed in Tampa as Bucs sign Andrus
When Mike Nugent gets his next opportunity, as Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris said he would, it will not come with the Buccaneers.
Nugent was asked to walk the plank in Tampa, a day after missing two field goals in the Bucs’ 16-13 loss to the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field. Nugent also missed two kicks in the season-opening loss to Dallas, and Morris decided his team didn’t have that kind of room for error at 0-4. The club announced that Shane Andrus has been signed.
Morris said Sunday that Nugent “will get his opportunity again,’’ but changed direction during his press conference earlier today when he said there would be a tryout, one Andrus obviously won. Nugent was one of the highest-paid kickers in the league with a base salary for 2009 of $2 million.
Andrus handled kickoff duties for Indianapolis in the season opener, and has kicked around since 2006 when he first joined the Colts as a free agent.
The Bucs also announced that they have placed cornerback Marcus Hamilton on waivers.
