Biggs: Packers place Spitz on injured reserve
The problems on the offensive line for the Green Bay Packers had been centered at the tackle position, but now they’ve got an issue on the interior of the line as Jason Spitz has been placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Spitz has been sidelined since the middle of last month with back spasms, and recently received a second medical opinion. The Packers signed wide receiver Biren Ealy off their practice squad to take Spitz’s place before Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay.
It looked like Spitz was be on his way to a lucrative contract extension. He’s in the final year of his contract, and won the starting center job over Scott Wells in training camp. After left tackle Chad Clifton was injured in Week 2, Spitz was moved to left guard. He’s also got experience starting for the Packers at right guard, where he stood out last season. Spitz’s agent Brian Ayrault declined to comment on the situation.
The Packers signed Ealy to the practice squad last week and he could be pressed into duty. Brett Swain and Jordy Nelson are expected to miss the game with knee injuries. Jake Allen, signed to the roster last week, has a leg injury and is questionable. Ealy last played for the Tennessee Titans in 2007.
Wells is back at center for the Packers and Daryn Colledge has returned to his familiar left guard position with Clifton now healthy. Mark Tauscher is expected to play right tackle on Sunday.
