Biggs: Reid says Gruden looks like a movie star
A multi-year contract extension for Jon Gruden with ESPN doesn’t prevent the coach-turned-broadcaster from returning to the sideline any time soon, but it sure signals he’s happy with what he’s doing right now as part of the network’s “Monday Night Football” crew.
But we turned to someone who knows Gruden well, who has worked with him before and posed the question, is he really going to be happy in the booth and not stalking the sideline for a few years?
“Listen, we just had a Monday night game not too long ago and Jon and I are good friends,’’ Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid said. “Son of a gun has lost 25 pounds and looks like a movie star and he’s got to know his kids better and his wife better and gets to play a little golf. You know what, he’s pretty doggone good at what he’s doing there, he’s with a great team with Jaws (Ron Jaworski) and Mike (Tirico), those are two great guys. And I think he’s happy. And I think they’re happy with him.
“I’m just saying, looking at him there were no bags under the eyes and there was no loop around the belt buckle. He looked good and I think he felt good about everything and is enjoying what he is doing. I don’t know what the future holds other than I think they took care of him pretty good and he deserves it. I think he’s good for the game. I am glad he is still in the game that way, in some way. He’s kind of fun to listen to.”
We’ll see if Gruden stays happy talking about the game and not coaching it.
