Biggs: Shawn Andrews to have 2nd back surgery
A day after the Philadelphia Eagles announced a contract extension for right tackle Winston Justice through 2013, Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the man he replaced, Shawn Andrews, will require a second back surgery.
Andrews is expected to undergo a second back surgery next week in California. Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed his initial surgery last year, will operate on the L4 and L5 lumbar discs in Andrews’ back, a move Watkins told the player was essential if he hopes to continue his playing career.
There is no timetable for a return for Andrews, who will go into 2010 having missed nearly all of the previous two seasons. Andrews had been rehabilitating under the supervision of Watkins, but a discogram discovered that surgery was successful.
What role, if any, Andrews will have moving forward with the Eagles is uncertain at this point. Coach Andy Reid said the new deal for Justice was not related, but let’s face it, Justice wouldn’t have been in position to play and excel had Andrews not been shut down this season. An opening was created, and Justice took advantage of it.
“This really had nothing to do with Shawn and Shawn's situation,” Reid said. “(Andrews) is taking care of that and I've always said that you can't have enough good offensive linemen. This wasn't done because of Shawn or anything else. It's because this kid (Justice) has come in and developed himself as a legitimate right tackle in the National Football League.’’
