Biggs: Undersized McCluster wants to be big offensive package

MOBILE, Ala.—Dexter McCluster isn’t sure what the NFL has in store for him just yet, and if he has any say in the matter it will be a little bit of everything. The Ole Miss offensive weapon—he likes the term O.W.—was used at running back in the South practice this afternoon and also spent some time in the slot. He’s heard from most teams that they would like to look at him in the slot, and there is a curiosity with McCluster right now. Can he be the 2010 version of Percy Harvin?

“Versatility,” McCluster said when asked what he would bring to an NFL team. “I don’t know what to call it. Me and my Dad kind of joke around about it, and I consider myself an offensive weapon. Put me anywhere and I’m going to give you everything I’ve got. Nine times out of 10, I won’t let you down.”

McCluster showed his versatility, diving to snare a deep pass from Tim Tebow in the session. He was quick and shifty coming out of the backfield.

“I would love to (get the chance to run the ball in the NFL), get lost behind those big guys and squirt through there,” he said.

McCluster carried the ball 181 times last season for 1,169 yards and also caught 44 passes. He’s entirely too small at 5-8, 165 pounds to be an every-down running back, but he could help a team in a number of ways.

He’s practicing returning punts and kicks this week, something he didn’t get a lot of opportunities to do in school.
