Biggs: Weis would relish job with Bears if one opens

Charlie Weis already said he knows where his son Charlie Jr. is not going to college.

But one potential coaching opportunity—there is no opening now—could allow Charlie Jr. to graduate from St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend, Ind., next year. If Weis were to join the coaching staff of the Chicago Bears, he’d be nearby enough that he would not be forced to uproot his family to take a job.

Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Weis would be interested in being the offensive coordinator for the Bears in the event that an opening occurs. Ron Turner is currently in that position and has a contract through 2010. Hayes cites a source close to Weis saying that the Bears would be intriguing.

Because coach Lovie Smith is so involved with the defense, it would give Weis the same autonomy on offense currently enjoyed by Turner, and he’d be able to work with a former Pro Bowl quarterback in Jay Cutler. Weis was fired at Notre Dame after consecutive 6-6 seasons, and has said he plans to work in the NFL next season.

NFL Network analyst Mike Martz has said he would like the opportunity to work with Cutler. Martz’s ties to Smith are well documented.
