Bill Callahan excited to take over Cowboys' play calling

Bill Callahan has not called offensive plays in the NFL for a decade but he’s excited about the opportunity to take on the assignment this season for the Dallas Cowboys.

I’m really excited. Anxious now,” Callahan said, according to the team’s Web site. “I wish we could continue working like we’ve been here, because the situation coach (Jason Garrett) has put us in has been tremendous.”

The identity of the Cowboys’ play caller has been a storyline since January when owner Jerry Jones said coach Jason Garrett would be handing over the chores to someone else. Earlier this month, Jones made it clear the gig was going to Callahan, who says he will handle the duties from the coaches’ box not on the sideline.

“We’ve had a lot of play-it-out scenarios, we’ve had two-minute, we’ve had four-minute, we’ve had red zone play-it-out, we have team blitz play-it-out,” Callahan said, “so we’ve been in every possible scenario you could be in situationally, and we’ve called the game live on the field. That communication process has really gotten more comfortable for me, Wade and the quarterback.”

Callahan stressed it will be a collaborative effort so expect Garrett to have say in the action. It will be interesting to see how this plays out because if the Cowboys offense suddenly takes off, that will not reflect well on Garrett in the court of public opinion.
