Bill O'Brien has no concerns with Jadeveon Clowney's motor
All eyes were on former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney this morning at his Pro Day, including the holders of the No. 1 overall pick.
Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien was on hand to see Clowney work out. Clowney is potentially in the mix to be selected first, though it all depends on whether Houston wants to address the offensive or defensive side of the ball.
One of the main reasons it's been assumed the Texans will pass on Clowney is due to the fact he was a 4-3 defensive end with the Gamecocks. The Texans will use a 3-4 base scheme, which would project Clowney as an outside linebacker.
Clowney did do defensive end and linebacker drills at his Pro Day, which seemed to impress O'Brien.
O'Brien, speaking to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio and Tedy Bruschi on SportsCenter, said that Clowney would wind up playing multiple positions if the Texans took him.
"You have to be prepared to play him at a number of different spots," O'Brien said. "It's good the d-line coaches ran him through d-line drills and then the linebacker coaches that were here ran him through some linebacker drills. I thought he performed well in all of the drills."
Though the Texans will run a 3-4 with Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator, O'Brien said the team will install a variety of packages.
"We are a 3-4 base defense ... but we are a very multiple defense," O'Brien said. "We play a three-down front, play an even front and also play a front which we call a floater package where we move guys around quite a bit. He's a guy, in our opinion, that can play a lot of different spots, which is why it was good to be here today to see him move around in the different drills."
One of the main concerns clouding Clowney is that he's not a high-motor player on game days. O'Brien said he didn't have those reservations.
"I don't have any concerns about his motor," he said. "There are 90 plays a game in college. You'd be hard-pressed to find a defensive lineman to go like his life's on the line ... He played a lot of plays. He played hard this year. I think when the game was on the line — the Tennessee game, the Georgia game — this guy showed up and made a lot of plays."
