Bills to start untested Jeff Tuel in opener
Buffalo Bills undrafted rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel will start against the New England Patriots in the season opener with quarterbacks Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel sidelined, coach Doug Marrone announced.
Kolb has a serious concussion and Manuel underwent knee surgery.
The Bills have also acquired quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Thaddeus Lewis.
Once Manuel returns, he's the guy.
"When he comes back, he'll be our quarterback," Marrone said. "I would view this situation as adversity. We're seeing a lot from the coaches and players in how we deal with it My first thought when I was younger was 'What did I do wrong in the past?"
Meanwhile, cornerback Stephon Gilmore broke his wrist and is expected to return in six to eight weeks.
"We believe he'll be back sooner than eight weeks," Marrone said.
Running back C.J. Spiller was excused from practice for personal reasons after his step grandfather's involvement in a murder-suicide.
