Brandon Marshall catches attention of Wade Phillips

Maybe Wade Phillips was joking.

Maybe he wasn’t.

But there is no doubt Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall has his full attention. The Houston Texans are preparing to face Chicago Sunday night at Soldier Field and they’re driven to slow down Marshall, who in eight games has put up bigger numbers than any Bears receiver did all last season.

Marshall has 59 receptions for 797 yards and seven touchdowns and Phillips has noted he’s about the only target quarterback Jay Cutler is looking for in his progressions.

We (will) double cover him every play,” Phillips said today in his press conference. “That’s our plan. We’re going to double cover him every play, so see what happens.”

The Texans needs to come up with something a week after Marshall set a career high with three touchdowns last Sunday at Tennessee. The Green Bay Packers are the only defense to shut down Marshall this season.

“Cutler, a real talent, I think everybody can recognize that,” Phillips said. “He’s a little bit Favre-ish. He’ll run around and make a play that nobody can make, that kind of thing. I think, they don’t have a problem, but they’ve only thrown it to one guy basically. They do a great job of that. He’s a tremendous receiver. We had him at the Pro Bowl and he was MVP. Marshall is a great receiver but they haven’t thrown it to the other guys very much, except the running back (Matt Forte) a little bit.”

Stay tuned.
