Brandon Meriweather suspended two games

It was inevitable that Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather would receive some type of punishment after connecting hard with Ravens receiver Torrey Smith's head in last Saturday's preseason game.

What he got was more than he probably bargained for. The NFL announced on Monday that Meriweather, who has long had a reputation as a head hunter, will be suspended for the first two games of the season.

This is the sixth time Meriweather has been disciplined for hits to an opposing player's head. A year ago, the NFL gave him a two-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit, though it was reduced to one game on appeal. With the track record he has, Meriweather may not be so lucky, assuming he does in fact appeal this particular suspension.

Washington's first two games this year are against Houston and Jacksonville.

Meriweather is doing no one any favors by continuing to lead head first into the head and neck area of offensive players. But it's unlikely he'll change is playing ways anytime soon.
