Breaking down Donald Butler's $51.8 million deal

San Diego Chargers linebacker Donald Butler's seven-year contract extension is worth $51.8 million and includes an $11.15 million signing bonus, according to a league source.

That's the only guaranteed money in the deal, though.

Following the 2016 regular season, Butler is due a $12 million option bonus that the Chargers have the choice of exercising on the fifth day of the league year following the Super Bowl that season. The option bonus would be in February of 2017.

In 2014, Butler has a $750,000 base salary and a $2.98 million salary-cap figure.

In 2015, Butler has a $3.25 million base salary and a $5.48 million salary-cap figure.

In 2016, Butler has a $4.65 million base salary and a $9.28 million salary-cap figure.

In 2017, Butler has a $4 million base salary and a $8.63 million salary-cap figure.

In 2018, Butler has a $4.65 million base salary and a $9.28 million salary-cap figure.

In 2019, Butler has a $5.35 million base salary and a $7.75 million salary-cap figure.

In 2020, Butler has a $6 million base salary and a $8.4 million salary-cap figure.
