Brian Urlacher, Bears dodge questions about knee treatment

Brian Urlacher is not at full speed on the football field at this point but he was plenty evasive off the field Wednesday when asked about the Chicago Tribune report he went to Germany to seek alternative treatment for his left knee.

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith also dodged the issue but the neither man denied the report.

“Once you come up with someone that says this happened, then I can respond to it,'' Smith said. "I know right now Brian Urlacher is here, getting healthy every day. And I don't see what else we need to talk about.”

Urlacher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Aug. 14 and the hope is he will return for the beginning of the regular season. Maybe eventually Urlacher will open up on the situation. David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune suggested it would be a good idea. The Tribune reported Urlacher travelled to Germany to see Dr. Peter Wehling for Regenokine therapy on his left knee, a procedure sports stars such as Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez have undergone.

Haugh points out Dr. Chris Renna, who partnered with Wehling on the creation of a treatment. The tie-in that raises eyebrows? The San Jose Mercury News reported that BALCO founder Victor Conte was provided with undetectable testosterone cream by Renna. And Renna was introduced to Conte by former NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski.

That’s not to suggest in any fashion that Urlacher did anything but seek what is considered a legitimate treatment for his left knee that was injured in the season finale last year. But there are questions and answering them would make a lot of sense.

"I have no comment (on Conte) but have spent my career helping everyone as much as I can,'' Renna told Haugh. "I have not discriminated based on what others thought of them or what they did outside the relationship I had. I have a clean record and a clear conscience from helping everyone to the best of my ability.''
