Broken promise: Ryan puts Leonhard back on punt returns

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has gone back on a promise he made to safety Jim Leonhard's wife, by putting the safety back on punt returns.

According to the New York Daily News, Ryan promised Katie Leonhard in training camp that her husband would no longer have to return punts for the Jets after he suffered a broken leg doing that duty last season.

But after issues with rookie Jeremy Kerley's handling of the ball last week, Ryan has made the switch back to the sure-handed Leonhard.

“I had to say, ‘Hey, have your wife call me,’ ” Ryan said. “It’s one of those things.”

Asked about the matter, Leonhard said, “My wife has let him hear it a couple times, And that’s good. You have to do that. That’s how you keep people in check.”
