Browns hire special teams coordinator Chris Tabor

Lovie Smith said on Monday that he hoped to keep his entire coaching staff together, and it was just more than 24 hours later that one of them departed.

Chris Tabor, the team’s assistant special teams coach for the previous three seasons, was hired as the special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

The Bears annually have one of the league’s top-ranked special teams units, and coordinator Dave Toub lauded the work of Tabor, promoting him for a job elsewhere in the league. The 39-year-old is energetic and relates well to players. He’ll go from working with one of the greatest returners of all-time in Devin Hester to another player with special skills in Joshua Cribbs.

Toub likely was instrumental in the hiring. He worked with new Browns coach Pat Shurmur in Philadelphia. The Browns called for permission to meet with Tabor on Monday. He interviewed this morning and was hired on the spot.
