Browns place Desmond Bryant on non-football illness list with irregular heartbeat

The Cleveland Browns placed defensive lineman Desmond Bryant on the reserve-non-football illness list due to an irregular heartbeat.

Bryant has dealt with this issue in the past and is now having problems again.

The Browns said Bryant will have "a minor heart procedure" this week, but is expected to make a full recovery and resume his career.

Bryant was taken out of an Oct. 3 game against the Buffalo Bills after complaining of shortness of breath and was hospitalized overnight with an irregular heartbeat. This also happened last year when he was playing for the Oakland Raiders.

"It's a pretty scary feeling," Bryant said in October. "Your heart won't calm down. Fortunately, we've got a great staff on hand and they've got me doing the right things I need and I'm now back to normal."

Bryant previously said he had made changes to address the issue.

"We're doing some things to prevent it from happening again," he said. "I need to try to cut out anything that may start this up, as well as taking some medication to help prevent it."

The Brown promoted receiver Brian Tyms to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

After spending the 2012 season on the Dolphins' practice squad, Tyms was signed to Cleveland's practice squad this past October. He played college football at Florida A&M.

Tyms' promotion came as a result of Bryant's illness. For the season, Bryant had 45 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

In addition, the Browns announced that it signed three players to the practice squad while releasing linebacker Justin Staples from the unit.

The new practice squad additions are defensive back T.J. Heath, defensive lineman Cam Henderson, and linebacker Jonathan Stewart.
