Browns sign Ben Tate

Former Houston Texans free agent running back Ben Tate has signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.

A former second-round draft pick, Tate ended last season on injured reserve with broken ribs. He rushed for 771 yards, working in tandem with Arian Foster.

In 2011, he rushed for a career-high 942 yards.

"I think I can bring you an elite running back," Tate told the FOX Houston affiliate before free agency. "I've learned a lot being behind Arian. Definitely, when I'm healthy I think I'm an elite running back in this league, and I feel like I can show my abilities and my numbers and my play will speak for itself, and guys will be able to see that I am a guy who is a top-five running back in this league, which I believe once I get out there and get to show that on a consistent basis. That's something I'm more excited for and something that I'm working hard this offseason just to prove my worth, that I am that person or that player that I think I am."

Tate is the fifth player signed by the Browns in the new league year. He has averaged 4.7 yards per carry for his career.

At Auburn, rushed for 3,321 yards on 678 carries with 24 touchdowns, and added 53 receptions for 336 yards.
