Bucs keeping Eric Wright at a discounted rate

A four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs has cost Eric Wright in a big way.

But the cornerback still has a job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wright, who was nailed with a four-game suspension last season, lost a grievance that voided $7.75 million in guaranteed salary for the 2013 season. But the Bucs are bringing him back at a discount. The team announced this afternoon it has reworked Wright’s contract and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports the new contract is worth a base value of $1.5 million and Wright has a chance to double that to $3 million. That is a sharp pay cut for Wright, who joined the team last season with a $38 million, five-year contract that now isn’t all that.

Whether or not this move affects the team in its reported pursuit of Darrelle Revis via trade from the New York Jets remains to be seen. Probably not. The Bucs has reportedly considered trading Wright but opted to keep him at what is a bargain rate.
