Bucs make Albert Haynesworth walk the plank

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t surprise anyone when they released Albert Haynesworth today, the third team that has let go of the defensive tackle since last summer.

The Bucs claimed Haynesworth off waivers from New England in November. The Patriots had picked him up in a cheap trade with the Washington Redskins before the season began.

Haynesworth appeared in seven games for Tampa and started six. He made 25 tackles but wasn’t the kind of dominating factor he once was in Tennessee.

When the scouting combine opened in 2009 in Indianapolis, Haynesworth was the hot story as he was shopped on the free-agent market and eventually Redskins owner Daniel Snyder took the plunge.

I appreciate Albert playing for us after some key injuries this past season,” Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement released by the team. “He was very professional and we now wish him all the best as he moves forward.”

The move saves the Bucs from having to pay Haynesworth a $400,000 roster bonus. He was due to earn $6.75 million this season.
