Cardinals turn back to Derek Anderson

Two of their next three games are in difficult road venues at Minnesota and Kansas City, and that factored in the Arizona Cardinals turning to Derek Anderson at quarterback.

Plus, the fact is the offense performed better with him in the game the last two weeks, making the move easy for coach Ken Whisenhunt to bench undrafted rookie free agent Max Hall. The Cardinals look at it like they’re going to the bullpen.

“Mariano Rivera," Anderson said, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. "Bring the big righty out of the 'pen."

Said Whisenhunt: "One of the things I considered is that Derek has at least been in situations like that. Also, I think he's a little bit more in tune with, after having been away as a starter for a couple weeks, what our expectations are."

Another factor that made it easy for the Cardinals to go back to Anderson is that he took his previous demotion in stride and was a professional.

"It does nothing but tear a team apart," Anderson said. "It allows you guys (reporters) to grab bits and pieces of things and make controversy out of things that probably aren't a big deal. It was just key for everybody to move forward.

"Obviously, I want to be the quarterback winning games, but if I'm not in there, I don't want to be a distraction."
