Cardinals would be wise to rest Beanie on Sunday
The closer the Arizona Cardinals get to Sunday’s season opener at St. Louis, the more it looks like running back Beanie Wells will be sidelined.
Wells was held out of practice on Thursday for the third consecutive day with a bruised knee that he suffered in the Cardinals’ preseason finale with the Washington Redskins a week ago. Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports it appears “doubtful” Wells will play.
If Wells is inactive, it means Tim Hightower will get a start against one of the league’s weaker defenses.
“What concerns me is I don't want this to be something in Week 12, or Week 13 or Week 14 that you're having issues with,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said, per Somers.
The Cardinals are down to two healthy backs – Hightower and LaRod Stephens-Howling as veteran Jason Wright is battling a case of turf toe.
Resting Wells makes good sense. It’s a long season and the Cardinals are going to be forced to rely on their running game more than they have in the past. Sitting him here after he missed a week of practice would be prudent.
