Cassel has hand surgery, may not miss season

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel underwent surgery Monday on his injured hand, but Coach Todd Haley says it is not necessarily season-ending, according to the Kansas City Star.

Haley said Cassel's surgery went "really well," and he is holding out hope that the veteran quarterback might be able to play again in the 2011 season.

“I would say there is potential (for a return),” Haley said, “but that really depends here on this first week and how things go.”

Normally, a team with a 4-5 record would probably put its injured quarterback on the shelf for the season with such an injury, but the Chiefs reside in the mediocre AFC West where that record has them entering the week just a game behind the Oakland Raiders for first place.

In the mean time, the Chiefs will get their first extended look at Tyler Palko at quarterback.
