Chad Greenway signs his franchise tender
Well, there will not be any suspense with one of the two candidates the Minnesota Vikings had for the franchise tag.
A week after the club announced it would place the franchise tag on linebacker Chad Greenway, the team has announced he’s signed the one-year tender. That guarantees Greenway will earn roughly $10 million in 2011, provided they play football this year.
Whether or not the team can lure the other candidate for the tag remains to be seen. Wide receiver Sidney Rice, despite a multi-year contract offer from the club, will explore the free-agent market before making a decision. When free agency will open is anyone’s best guess at this point. The Vikings want Rice back but absent a quarterback to get him the ball, that may be a tough sell. Unless they really overpay for his services.
While Rice was a one-year wonder with Brett Favre in 2009, Greenway has led the team in tackles three times. The Vikings will likely try to sign Greenway to a long-term contract.
