Chad Jones' father says his son is upbeat

Football is on the mind of Chad Jones, that’s what his father Al Jones is saying anyway.

Hours after coming out of a lengthy surgery to repair his broken left leg and prevent the need for his left foot to be amputated, Chad Jones was talking about a return to football – something that is still very much up in the air following his grisly one-car accident Friday morning in New Orleans.

Certainly Jones is on the mind of the New York Giants, who drafted the two-sport star from LSU in the third round, signing him to a four-year contract with an $825,000 contract earlier this month. Chad Jones has spoken on the telephone with Giants coach Tom Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese, and the Giants sent Charles Way, their director of player development to New Orleans to see him.

“Football is always going to be on Chad's mind," Al Jones told the New York Post. “When he's 90 years old with great-grandchildren, he's going to be thinking about playing football again. It has to be that way. That's his first love, that's his love. Quite naturally, he's thinking about a whole lot of other things, too, but he's glad to be able to think about those things.

“Chad is talking, Chad is alert. He's almost back to the old Chad again," Jones said. "He just wants everybody to know that he's doing fine. He's going to come through it, and we as a family wish to thank everybody for all the love that they've shown him and let them know that it's greatly appreciated.”

There is no telling what kind of rehabilitation process is ahead of Jones. At this point, it would be surprising to us if he didn’t spend the 2010 season on injured reserve. Just coming back from two broken bones in his leg – the fibula and tibia – will be a substantial task. Factor in an ankle and foot that nearly needed to be removed, and there is a long road ahead of Chad Jones. It sounds like his father Al believes he’ll navigate that road just fine.
