Chargers hire McCoy as new head coach

The San Diego Chargers have hired Mike McCoy as their new head coach, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

McCoy has been a hot coaching candidate for the past couple of seasons after doing well as the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator. In 2011, he completely revamped the Denver offense to accommodate Tim Tebow, and then reworked it again when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning last March.

McCoy inherits a Chargers team that he is not only familiar with, but one that has some weapons in quarterback Philip Rivers, tight end Antonio Gates and running back Ryan Mathews among others. The Chargers have long been an underachiever, but moved in a new direction this off-season, first with the hiring of Tom Telesco as GM and now McCoy as head coach.
