Charles Mann latest to call out Albert Haynesworth

It’s got to be difficult to find a supporter for Albert Haynesworth in Washington these days and two days before the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history is to report for minicamp, Dan Steinberg has found another detractor.

Add former Redskins standout defensive end Charles Mann to the list of those siding against Haynesworth, who has missed three months of the team’s voluntary offseason workout program. Steinberg of the Washington Post relayed a chat Mann had on ESPN 980 in Washington last week.

“Man, lemme tell you this, for a million dollars I would have done all those things (in the offseason program), not a hundred million," Mann told ESPN 980. “And I've sat with Albert and his wife and his mother at an event in the community. I just don't think he realizes. I'm looking at athletic events, I'm looking at the way these athletes handle different situations, and I look, and I say gosh.

“I mean, you go through it, you're young, and you think this is the way it's supposed to be and this is just regular life, and they have no clue as to the opportunity that they're in the midst of. I'd crawl on the ground backwards for a hundred million dollars.

“I mean, just do the work. He looks more like a nose tackle, and a 3-4's gonna be great for him. You know why a 3-4 would be great? Because all he'll have to do is what he did last year, and that's just fall on the ground, pile it up a little bit and the linebackers roll past you and make the plays, He doesn't even have to make a play in the 3-4."

It will be very interesting to find out what kind of shape Haynesworth is in when he shows up. One of the things he told coach Mike Shanahan when he informed him he wouldn’t be around during the offseason was that he preferred to work out on his own. The Redskins ought to have a real good handle on what type of condition he is Wednesday morning. Mann, for one, doesn’t see him coming ready to play football.

“Heck no!" Mann said. "Heck no. Did he show up last year in shape for the league, for the season? I mean, c'mon now."

Soon enough will see if Haynesworth is prepared to make believers out of some of the doubters. There’s a long line of the latter.
