Chicago Mayor wants Super Bowl, NFL draft in Chicago

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the Chicago Tribune that he wants the city of Chicago to host the NFL draft, and become another cold-weather candidate for a Super Bowl.

Based on the interview, it sounds like Emanuel is already lobbying the NFL.

The NFL has traditionally held its draft in New York, but seems open to at least looking around.

Chicago in the spring for the draft seems fine. Dealing with a small stadium like Soldier Field and wintry weather for a Super Bowl doesn't sound like such a great idea.

“I would say that there are two things in pro football I would love to see in Chicago, either one of them or both: the NFL draft and the Super Bowl," Emanuel said. "They have different advantages for the city given that we have neither one, both would be great attractions for the city to bring national attention. We’ll work on both. There’s something to the draft and there’s something to the Super Bowl. I compliment the NFL for deciding to change to cold-weather cities."

What about the bad weather and smaller stadium capacity?

"If you’re able to make a decision where there’s no opposition, call me," Emanuel said. "Because I don’t know any decision about anything that has 100 percent support. So the goal is not to find a decision that unifies 100 percent. The goal is to find a decision that moves the city forward.

"You don’t measure it that way. Would a Super Bowl be good for the city and good for the NFL? I think yes. Would having the NFL draft here be good for the city and for the NFL? The answer is yes. The goal is to have a discussion about both."
