Chicago quake: Front office shakeup continues

The other shoe dropped today at Halas Hall.

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo informed college scouting director Greg Gabriel that his contract will not be renewed, effectively firing his second lieutenant in a little more than two months.

Angelo said last week that he would make an announcement regarding an expected reshuffling in the front office when there was news to announce. That time would be now. Angelo first informed pro personnel director Bobby DePaul in February that his contract would not be renewed.

Next, the Bears are expected to hire ex-Seattle Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell in a to-be-named position that will likely oversee the pro and college departments. Angelo and Ruskell worked together for more than a decade in the front office in Tampa Bay, and with the Bears facing a win-or-else mandate, the club is undergoing massive turnover.

Kevin Turks could be promoted from within for a pro personnel job. Southwest area scout Chris Ballard could be give Gabriel’s position. DePaul and Gabriel were the first hires Angelo made when he came on board in June 2001. Now, he’s looking elsewhere.
