Chris Cooley only seeking a starting job

Chris Cooley doesn’t envision returning to the Washington Redskins this season.

Not unless there is a significant injury.

That is what the veteran, the franchise’s career leader for receptions by a tight end, told Mark Maske of the Washington Post. Some figured the Redskins might bring Cooley back after Week 1 so his salary was not guaranteed. It doesn’t appear that is going to happen with Fred Davis in the primary role now.

“I want to play here, but I don’t know if anything will happen with that,” Cooley told Maske. “(General manager) Bruce (Allen) and I are friends. We sat down and had a beer and we talked about golf, mostly. The way it looks to me is if something happens here, they would love to have me. If Fred gets hurt or something like that, I think I’d be the guy they sign. I think that.”

Cooley said he has received offers but none that would present him with a starting job, which is what he seeks.

“I’ve had offers,” he said, per the report. “I said to my agent, ‘You know what I want. And you don’t need to call me if it’s not something I want.’ I don’t have that much interest in the interest there is in me so far. If I could go somewhere and start, I’d probably do that. That’d be fun.”

Cooley said the Patriots expressed interest before they signed Kellen Winslow Jr. He also told Maske he is not interested in playing for the minimum. At this point, with his high mileage, that might be the only kind of offer that comes along.
