Chris Hovan headed to St. Louis

Free-agent defensive tackle Chris Hovan has agreed to a contract with the St. Louis Rams, giving them some depth on the interior of a line that was a problem spot a year ago.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer will join the Rams, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, giving them a veteran presence in the middle for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. The 32-year-old Hovan spent the last five seasons with the Bucs and missed only two games over that span.

Hovan was also a model of durability in his first five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He credited ex-Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli with helping turn around his career in Tampa after he flamed out in Minnesota.

He became expendable for the Bucs when they spent the third pick in the draft on Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and followed up by using a second-round pick on UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price.
