Christian Ponder knows chances are running out
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has done his best to characterize his three quarterbacks as participating in a competition.
But it's fairly evident that both Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel have better shots at starting Week 1 than Christian Ponder. And to Ponder's credit. he's very aware of the situation that's presenting itself.
Speaking to The Pioneer Press, Ponder noted that he understands what his role with the Vikings has become, though he'll continue to give it his all in training camp to at least position himself with a shot at regaining the starting job down the road.
"I'll get opportunities through training camp and preseason to try to earn a spot," he said. "It's not awkward — I understand what's going on. I had some opportunities that I didn't take full advantage of. If I would have played better, I wouldn't be in the situation here right now.
"We'll see how it plays out — football's a crazy game."
Ponder said that Cassel is the starter but that the organization is doing what it can to speed the process up for Bridgewater to get him ready. That would seemingly put Ponder on the outside looking in.
But as Ponder mentioned, crazy things happen in football. After all, Josh Freeman started a game for the Vikings a year ago, though that ended in disaster.
Time will tell as to what happens with Ponder, a former first-round pick. But his days in Minnesota do appear to be at the beginning of its end.
