CJ's conditioning could be part of the issue
Chris Johnson said after Sunday's 41-7 blow out loss against the Houston Texans that he did not believe he was the issue in the running game.
His Titans teammates continue to say that it is a team effort - and such a loss usually is. But it is clear that Johnson is nowhere close to the same level he was before his celebrated holdout and $53 million contract extension.
One reason could be Johnson's conditioning. Johnson not only missed the off-season with the lockout, but also missed all of training camp and all of the preseason and getting into football shape often takes time.
But sources have told TitanInsider.com that Johnson's reporting condition may have been an issue with all those factors.
Johnson, who had just 18 yards on 10 carries, said he after the game did not believe his conditioning was an issue.
"I feel like I've been back," he said. "I feel like my conditioning and me missing camp, I can't say that that's the problem with the running game."
But Johnson's friend Arian Foster, who gashed the Titans for 115 yards rushing and 119 receiving, said he himself is still not in football shape after the lack of an off-season and a hamstring injury. He can't imagine that Johnson would be..
“He's going through a lot of what I went through, except that I did have some football before,” Foster said. “It's tough, and he's getting a lot of criticism right now. When you don't go through a training camp, you can run all day, but football shape is football shape, and it takes awhile."
