Clausen will make teams pay
I know I haven’t been the biggest fan of Jimmy Clausen throughout the draft process and have bought up some potential character concerns, health issues and a lack of overall upside. However, in all honesty, I not only think he’s the safest quarterback prospect of the group, I also think he’s one of the safer prospects in the entire 2010 draft.
I don’t think Clausen has an elite physical skill set or will ever be a legit blue-chip quarterback. But he’s an accurate passer who does a great job quickly deciphering information, understands the inner workings of an NFL offense and is simply too good a player for teams to pass up in a quarterback-starved league.
When looking over the entire NFL, you could make a case right now that there are up to six teams that Clausen could step into right away and be the team’s best quarterback.
I know Clausen has some flaws and doesn’t come without a little baggage, but at a premium position in the NFL, he has the ability to give a team above-average play at that spot. And there are quite a few starting quarterbacks in the league right now that I know I would take Clausen over in a heartbeat.
So if I’m a team with questions at the quarterback position, I make a play for Clausen immediately tonight. Because he not only has the ability to instantly upgrade your team at the most important position in the NFL, but if you don’t, he’s the kind of guy who will make you pay for not drafting him for years to come.
