Cliff Avril repeats he probably won't be in camp on time

Reiterating what he already said earlier this week, Cliff Avril maintains it is unlikely he will be at training camp when Detroit Lions players are due to report July 26.

Eric Lacy of the Detroit News reports the defensive end, who failed to get a multi-year extension done on Monday before the deadline for players that have been collared with the franchise tag, is a good bet to be late.

I probably won't be there the first day for sure,” Avril said on ESPN, according to the report. “I have to sit down with my agent and figure out if we're even going to show up. I'm not sure yet.”

Avril stands to earn $10.6 million this season with the tender, and he has not ruled out signing a long-term deal with the club after this season. Previously, he suggested he might be as much as a week late to camp in order to be at home for his son’s first birthday. If Avril wanted, he could hold out significantly longer than that.

Avril has been professional throughout the situation and has maintained a classy stance. He didn’t get the long-term security he was seeking but he hasn’t pitched a fit about it. We’ll see what direction this heads.
