Cliff Avril says contract situation 'nothing to stress out about'

Cliff Avril does not understand what is difficult about getting a long-term deal done.

Of course, it’s easy in the eyes of the Detroit Lions defensive end, who will gladly sign a deal that meets the value he has established for himself. But the Lions and Avril, who has been secured with the franchise tag, have yet to find that common ground.

The deadline for a multi-year contract is now less than four weeks away with July 16 the deadline. Otherwise, Avril will be playing under the tag for the 2012 season.

It can't be any more complicated than the next,” Avril said, according to NFL.com. “I take it with a grain of salt, in a sense. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. It's nothing to stress out about, I know I'm not stressed out over it. I don't know what makes it more complicated though.

“If they're going to give me a deal, we'll eventually get it. If not, I'll have to unfortunately play under the tag and be in the same situation again next year, and that's what I'm really trying to avoid. I want to be with my team, I want to keep getting better with this team, but it's all up to management from that point.”

It’s good Avril is already acknowledging the possibility he’ll be in the same situation again in 2013 as the Lions will have the right to place the franshise tag on him a second time. Hopefully, it will not come to that. The Lions have a good, young nucleus and they want to make Avril a part of that. He had 11 sacks last season and with a talented defensive front, the Lions are building on that side of the ball much the same way the New York Giants have.

We’ll see if a deal can be done.
