Colorful Clinton Portis ready to make retirement official

Sheriff Gonna Getcha, Southeast Jerome, Coach Janky Spanky and Dolla Bill are hanging ’em up on Thursday.

In other words, Clinton Portis is going to make it official when he announces his retirement on Thursday afternoon at Redskins Park.

Portis has not played since 2010 and he will walk away from the game just shy of 10,000 career yards. Portis finishes second on the Redskins’ all-time list with 6,824, just 648 behind all-time leader John Riggins. The two had a public feud and Riggins, no doubt, is pleased to still be atop the list.

A second-round pick of the Broncos in 2002, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards and 75 touchdowns between Denver and Washington. The Redskins traded for Portis when Joe Gibbs came out of retirement and the offense was run heavily through the workhorse back. Eventually Portis wore down and he was unable to find work last season.
